The Festival of Champions was created in 1993 by Mike Fenton to give Riding Club members the opportunity to have their very own Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) at a fraction of the cost.  The first Festival was held over a two day period in 1994 at Birchinley Manor Equestrian Centre with 350 entries representing 19 Riding Clubs.

Steven Gardner, freelance event organiser and commentator at Birchinley Manor was involved in the Festival from the outset and introduced the theme “Simply the Best” to reflect on the quality of the Championship winners.The Festival of Champions is now known as the Festival Association.
